Covid-19 Rehabilitaiton

Rehabilitation for people sudffering with Covid-19 is saving lives. The CSP (Chartered society of physiotherapy) have advised, that up to 25% of hospitalised Covid-19 patients will need to be in intensive care, often for prolonged periods. Most of them (67%) will have acute respiratory distress syndrome. Rehabilitation at this stage enables people to clear their airways and manage their breathing. Remobilising acutely ill patients as soon as possible is recommended by the World Health Organization.

Rehabilitation at all stages – in hospital and in the community. Ongoing rehabilitation will be essential for many Covid-19 survivors. Many patients will be left with scarring on their lungs. Many more may experience breathlessness, high levels of fatigue and have significant muscle deconditioning and loss of strength.

COVID-19 and Neurological Symptoms

Neurological symptoms have been observed in patients with COVID-19. It has been reported that more than one-third of patients experienced various neurological symptoms including the involvement of central nervous system (dizziness, headache, impaired consciousness, acute cerebrovascular disease, ataxia and epilepsy), peripheral nervous system (taste impairment, smell impairment, vision impairment and neuralgia) and skeletal muscular damage.

However, there has been reports of more serious neurological symptoms. In the most serious cases, these include:

Stroke

An association with both ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke has been noted.

CSF infection

Evidence is available showing that COVID can cause brain infections.

GBS

The Lancet published the first report of a COVID positive patient who was also diagnosed with GBS. The article was released on April 1st but the admission occurred in January, it is therefore possible that more cases of GBS can be associated with COVID-19.
